44 years on Orcas Island (since Feb, 1981): School Board, Medical Board, Water Board, County Council, Fire Advisory Board, Innkeeper, Restaurant Owner, Public Health District Commissioner. (40+ years of giving back to community)

Attorney, Mediator, Teacher, Cook. Loves to Entertain using hand made ceramics. Color Guru (of sorts). Loves moving furniture, sewing accessories for the cottages and out of need, Web designer and Photographer. 4th Generation Washingtonian. Great Grandfather came in 1898 to work on the railroads, Grandfather worked on a Dairy Farm and Father born in Kent, Washington. Born in Japan, grew up in Hawaii. lived in Hiroshima, Osaka (Japan), Sydney (Australia), Washington DC (Bethesda, MD) and Florida. Saw an American flag on San Juan Island while traveling and said, "if this is America, I want to live here!" and made it happen.
25 years on Orcas Island (since May, 1999) Orcas Center Board, Helping Other Charities on Orcas Island.
ASSERTIVELY RETIRED: Painting, going for walks, book club, taking care of rentals. (Down to 3 from 9 -- enjoying LESS is MORE. it is!). And showing off Miniature food collection.

Introduced by friends on island. Both first BLIND DATE. Let's say almost immediacy fell in love, married and the story continues. Enjoying mutual interests, seeing the world and discussing (civilly ?) points of contention. A young couple once saw us interacting and enviously asked: "How long did it take to get an act (comedy??) like yours together? (Natural question since we were an OLD couple). We had been seeing each other for just 4 months then.
If any indication-- end of our first telephone conversation (a short one setting up a lunch date).
Nanae: "Oh no, that means I have to put on make up."
Richard: "And, that means I have to clean my car."

On a return ferry from Victoria (Canada), saw an American flag in Friday Harbor (with no prior knowledge) said, "if this is America, I want to live here!" And, made it happen. On Orcas since 1999.
Assertively retired. Playing mahjong, drawing, painting, making a full set of dishes in ceramics class, trying not to miss book club! (learning to design a website, taking pictures). Also excelling at "Doing Nothing!" 2024 Resolution: Walk more, paint more.
After much effort in 2021-2023, some flowers grew on our Rocky waterfront but the return on time invested leaves me thinking that Rock garden is the way to go. . .now collecting ROCKS!
